This is in my opinion is one of the most important aspect to growing great roses. As when building a house, the foundation determines whether the house will be strong or not.
Let's consider what the rose bush will need to grow well. We would like the soil to have the following properties:
Loose and friable soil - this will allow the roots to grow easily into a large root ball which will support a large healthy bush above the ground
Well drained - roses do not like to stand with their feet in water
Rich in Nutrients - This is what the plant is going to take up through its roots when it grows
Lots of earthworms - This is an indication that the soil is healthy
